Peter Fletcher, Classical Guitarist

Peter Fletcher is a critically acclaimed classical guitarist. We are very pleased to welcome him back to Central Citizens' Library to perform for us on Tuesday, May 17, at 6:30 PM in the Central High School auditorium. Mr. Fletcher has toured the world playing his guitar at over 100 concerts each year. In the tradition of Segovia, Fletcher believes in expanding the repertoire of guitar music by transcribing music from other instruments, making his music a unique and exciting experience.

Freedom Quilts Program

Join Dr. Clarice Boswell on Saturday, May 14, at 10:00 AM, as she tells the historical story of quilts made by African-American slaves before the Civil War. She will discuss the significance of the hidden codes that enabled the slaves to safely travel the Underground Railroad to freedom. Quilts sewn by local seamstresses will also be on display throughouth the library. This free program will be held in the handicap accessible Fine Arts room of Nash Middle School. EXCHANGE FOOD FOR FINES

Central Citizens’ Library District wants to help you take care of your overdue fines – while giving you an opportunity to help your neighbors.

CCLD Library is sponsoring Food for Fines November 1 through November 30, 2010. The library will forgive $0.50 of overdue fines for each non-perishable, non-expired food item. Previously opened or glass items will not be accepted. Amnesty does not apply to library materials that have been lost or damaged. Donations must take place in person during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday 8 AM to 8 PM, Friday 8 AM to 4 PM, and Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM. No items will be accepted through the book drop. The food items will be donated to a local food pantry. Food for Fines is part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the problems of hunger and homelessness in the local

community and nationwide. It’s a great way to help the community, the

library, and yourself. Don’t owe any fines? Please consider making a food

donation anyway!

Barn Quilts of Kankakee

Join Rhonda and Jerry Legan on Tuesday, October 26th, at 6:30 PM for a slide and video presentation highlighting the construction and installation of the Kankakee County Barn Quilts. They will share locations, photos, quilt block information, and barn/farm/family history. Central Citizens' Library District is a handicap accessible facility. Scare Up a Good Book!

Welcome to summer reading at Central Citizens' Library! It's time to register for Scare Up a Good Book. Participants will be asked to read for a total of 360 minutes and attend at least three out of the four weeks. This will qualify you for a trip to the Field Museum in Chicago on Tuesday, July 6th. Children of all ages are welcome to join us. You must have a valid CCLD library card in order to participate.

We are offering four sessions for children who have finished grade five and younger: Tuesdays at 10:00 AM, Wednesdays at 10:00 AM, Thursdays at 10:00 AM, and Thursdays at 6:30 PM. Those who have finished sixth grade and older attend the TWEEN group on Wednesdays at 2:00 PM. If you have conflicts, you can always attend a different session for that week. Central Citizens' Library District is one of 4,000 libraries across the country selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA) to receive free hardcover editions of 17 classic books as part of the We the People Bookshelf grant program. The theme of this year’s Bookshelf is “A More Perfect Union.”

Selected public and school libraries in all 50 states each will receive a set of the 17 books, bonus materials including a DVD edition of “The Civil War,” the award-winning documentary by Ken Burns, posters, bookmarks, bookplates from the NEH and the ALA, and access to online planning and promotional materials. Since 2003, NEH and ALA havae distributed 17,000 We the People Bookshelf grants to school and public libraries across the country.

You May Qualify to Be a Census Taker if:

You are able to read, write, and speak English.
You are a U.S. citizen.
You are at least 18 years old.
You have a valid social security number.
You take a written test of basic skills.
You have a valid driver's license.
You pass a background check.
You are a legal permanent resident, or non-citizen with an appropriate work visa, and you possess a bilingual skill for which there are no available qualified U.S. citizens.
You commit to four days of training. You will be paid for training days. Training can be held either during daytime hours or during evening and weekend hours.

CCLD COLORING CONTEST WINNERS

The Central Citizens’ Library District board members selected winners of the sixteenth annual Christmas Coloring Contest following their monthly meeting December 17th. The contest picture was drawn by Abby Rosenboom and was decorated by dozens of children and adults. All winners received gift cards from Barnes and Noble. The winning entries will be on display at CCLD. The winners are:

Pre-K/Kindergarten and Younger: 1st prize to Marshall Meyer; 2nd prize to Jayce Meier; 3rd prize to Giacomo Panozzo.

First, Second, and Third Grades: 1st prize to Riley Thompson; 2nd prize to Reagan Panozzo; 3rd prize to Topanga Powell.

Summer Reading Program 2009!

Read on the Wild side with CCLD! It is time once again to register for Summer Reading. Registration forms are available at the library. We are asking participants to read for a total of 360 minutes and attend at least three out of the four sessions. This will qualify you for the end of the program trip. You must have a valid CCLD card to participate.

We are offering four sessions for children who have finished grade 5 and younger:

Tuesdays @ 10:00A.M. (begins June 9)

Wednesdays @ 10:00 A.M. (begins June10)

Thursdays @ 10:00 A.M. and also @ 6:30 P.M. (begins June11)

We also offer a TWEENS group for students who have completed 6th grade:

Wednesdays @ 2:00 P.M.

We will kick off our Summer Reading Program with a presentation in our auditorium on Tuesday June 9th at 11:00 A.M. Jim Nisci will present "Cold Blooded Creatures!" to all ages.

Do you enjoy mysteries or science fiction? Were you dying to discuss the events you read in the Twilight series? Are you awaiting the newest novel by Terry Goodkind?
